Why Does My Car Shake When I'm Braking?
Shaking when braking is almost always caused by brake rotors with excessive run out. Basically meaning the rotor is out of round. Depending on the condition of the car's suspension, the quality of the brake parts and the driving habits of the driver, this can be a common issue. Especially for commuters who are often in stop and go traffic on the freeway. To take a car from 65+MPH rapid;y down to bumper to bumper traffic is very taxing on your brake system. If their is enough thickness left, the rotor can be machined which will true up its shape and get rid of the pulsation. Otherwise the rotors must be replaced to fix the vibration.
Our Brake Process
Their are several critical components in your brake system that should be serviced regularly. We make sure to service them during every brake job. That is why all our brake jobs include a full brake system bleed an flush. This removes all the old grimy brake fluid and replaces it with new fluid. We machine or replace your rotors, replace your brake pads and clean and adjust (if applicable) your emergency brake.
Brake Fluid
Brake fluid absorbs water over time. When your fluid is not replaced that water can corrode your internal components such as your abs modulator (a very expensive repair). Having water in your brake fluid is also a huge safety concern. Your brake fluid gets very hot. The boiling point on water is much lower than brake fluid. If you have water in your brake lines and it boils, it begins to turn into air. Air in your brake system will lead to a soft or even no pedal.
It is also very important to use the correct fluid. The 2 most common fluid types on normal vehicles will be DOT 3 and DOT 4. The cap on your master cylinder will indicate which is correct for your car. The primary difference is the boiling point is higher on DOT 4. You can use DOT 4 in a DOT 3 system but DO NOT use DOT 3 in a DOT 4 system!
